At Georgia College, our Photography program is designed to support student learning, foster community engagement, and provide a solid foundation for aspiring photographers. Through hands-on workshops, seminars, and critiques led by experienced faculty members, students gain technical proficiency, artistic insight, and critical thinking skills essential for success in the field. Beyond the classroom, our program encourages students to actively engage with the community through collaborative projects, exhibitions, and outreach initiatives, fostering meaningful connections and real-world experiences.
With a curriculum grounded in both traditional and contemporary photographic practices, Georgia College's Photography program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue their artistic ambitions while making a positive impact in the world around them.
Photography Department Facilities & Equipment
Darkrooms: The GCSU Photography Area is fully equipped with two separate darkrooms, one for black and white film development, and another which provides space for alternative process experimentation. Our darkroos feature enlargers that accommodate negatives for 35mm, 6x6cm medium format negatives, and 4x5 large format negatives. We ensure a safe and professional environment with ventilation systems, adequate safelights, and drying racks to safely store freshly developed prints.
Film Processing Area: The GCSU Photography Area provides dedicated spaces for film loading and processing, equipped with high-quality film tanks and reels, chemical storage, and temperature-controlled water baths for precise film development. We also offer hot bed presses for flattening prints and mat cutters for presentation preparation.
Digital Computer Lab: The GCSU Photography Area features state-of-the-art computer workstations equipped with photo editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom), high-resolution scanners for film and prints, and professional-grade inkjet printers capable of printing up to 44 inches wide.
Lighting Studio: The GCSU Photography Area provides a fully equipped lighting studio with a range of lighting equipment, including strobes, continuous lights, softboxes, blackout privacy curtains, and various backdrops for creative and commercial photography projects.
Equipment: The GCSU Art Department also provides students with equipment for projects such as cameras (both digital and film), lenses, tripods, and portable lighting kits.
